Ikat is dyed before it is woven: skeins of silk are bound and dipped, bound again and dipped again, so that the pattern exists in the thread before the loom is touched. That is why the edges of every motif blur — the cloth remembers the resist. Margilan Ikat House works with natural indigo, madder and pomegranate skin, and weaves on hand looms at a pace of about two metres a day.
