Ala-kiyiz is the older, softer cousin of shyrdak: coloured wool is laid into a pattern and felted into the base in one piece, so the edges bloom. Smaller, lighter, perfect beside a bed.

Materials & making
Hand-felted sheep wool. 120 × 80 cm, 2.2 kg.
Each piece is made by hand; small variations are part of its character.
Care
Vacuum gently or shake outdoors. Spot clean with cold water and wool soap. Never machine wash. Rotate the rug twice a year for even wear.

Shyrdak is made by cutting two layers of dyed felt into mirror-image patterns and stitching them back together, so that every rug is in fact two rugs, positive and negative. The Collective brings together forty women from villages around Naryn at 2,000 metres, working with wool from their own flocks. A two-metre shyrdak takes a month and is expected to last a lifetime.
