About the studio

Shyrdak is made by cutting two layers of dyed felt into mirror-image patterns and stitching them back together, so that every rug is in fact two rugs, positive and negative. The Collective brings together forty women from villages around Naryn at 2,000 metres, working with wool from their own flocks. A two-metre shyrdak takes a month and is expected to last a lifetime.
